Mercedes opted to promote junior driver George Russell into the seat alongside Lewis Hamilton for 2022, leaving Bottas to agree on a multi-year deal with Alfa Romeo. Alfa Romeo team boss Frederic Vasseur told Motorsport.com last year he thought the move could aid Bottas’s development as he would no longer be “in the shadow” of Hamilton.
