When Gillian Pinder converted the winning penalty in the shoot-out against Spain that sent Ireland in to the 2018 World Cup final in London it would have been hard to imagine any day in her hockey career matching those happiness levels. But on the club front at least, Saturday might just have come close when she captained Pembroke Wanderers to their first ever EY Hockey League title.
“It’s been a long time coming,” she said, Pembroke last winning a major national honour back in 1975, a whole 17 years before Pinder was even born.
