Former New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum is set to be appointed as England’s Test coach having informed close contacts that he has been offered the job.
He is also understood to have handed in his notice at Kolkata Knight Riders, leaving him free to take up a new role after their final game of the Indian Premier League season is played next Wednesday.
A formal announcement from the England and Wales Cricket Board is expected soon, with McCullum emerging as favourite since the interview process was completed.
The Indian Express reported on Wednesday that KKR’s players have been told about McCullum’s imminent departure, with an unnamed insider quoted as saying: “He informed us that he won’t be part of KKR going ahead as he will be taking up a job as England cricket team coach. He informed us during a team meeting a few days ago.”
