Canelo Alvarez’s clash with Jermell Charlo confirmed for September 30 in Las Vegas as Mexican superstar puts undisputed super-middleweight crown on the line against 154lb king

Canelo Alvarez’s fight with Jermell Charlo has been confirmed, with the two undisputed champions set to go head to head on September 30 in Las Vegas.

The Mexican superstar will put his four super-middleweight belts on the line against the younger Charlo twin, who is stepping up two divisions from light middleweight, where he reigns supreme.

It is Canelo’s third consecutive defence of his 168lbs crown, following victories over Britain’s John Ryder and Gennady Golovkin. It is also the first time in the four-belt era that two reigning undisputed champions have collided.

‘I’m very happy that we got to make a fight of this magnitude between two undisputed champions,’ the Mexican said. 

‘Jermell Charlo has also faced the best in his division, and I’m glad that the fans are going to enjoy a world class fight between us on September 30.’

Charlo has vowed to upset boxing’s biggest star and become undisputed champion in a second weight class.  

‘I’m really excited to make history once again,’ he said. 

‘This is the biggest fight in boxing and I’m coming to leave it all in the ring like I do every time. I manifested this fight into existence and earned it with everything I’ve done in this sport so far. 

‘Canelo is a great fighter, but he’s gonna see what Lions Only is all about. When the fight’s over, people are gonna have to recognize that I’m the best fighter in the sport.’

Charlo has won 35 of 37 professional fights and he will hope to succeed where his stablemate Errol Spence Jr failed only a few weeks ago.

Terence Crawford called out Charlo during his win over Spence in last month’s much-anticpated fight to crown an undisputed welterweight king. 

Charlo, who like Spence is trained by Derrick James in Dallas, has not fought since beating Brian Castano in their rematch in May 2022.
