Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez has revealed that his next opponent on May 4 will be an American, not a Mexican – marrying up to claims he is set to face Jermall Charlo not Jaime Munguia.
The Mexican superstar has already put his four super-middleweight belts on the line against the younger Charlo twin, Jermell, in September 2023 – winning the bout via unanimous decision.
However, some fans felt that was a mismatch as Jermell had to step up two divisions from light middleweight to face Canelo after his brother avoided negotiations while dealing with personal issues.
Nevertheless, it looks as though Jermall could avenge his brother’s loss on May 4 as Canelo has revealed he will defend his undisputed WBA, WBC, IBF & WBO super-middleweight world titles against an American next – according to Box Azteca.
There were a number of names linked with Canelo for the May 4 date – including the likes of Terence Crawford, David Benavidez, and Munguia. However, reports are stating it will be Jermall who gets to fight the Mexican next.

The fight will see Jermall return to the ring for the first time since his victory over Benavidez Jr
The fight will see Jermall return to the ring for the first time since his victory over Jose Benavidez Jr. The unanimous decision marked his first bout in over two years after taking some time away from the sports for personal issues.
The fight with Benavidez was also the first time that Jermall had fought above the 160lb limit, having won the WBC middleweight title in 2019 and defended it three times.
Jermall will be eager to avenge his brother’s loss to Canelo in September 2023- despite ‘not seeing eye-to-eye’ in recent years.
Jermell also spoke about how he was frustrated with Jermall’s actions outside of the ring and said he felt as though his older brother had ‘tarnished’ their name and suggested that was the main reason for their fallout.
‘This family affair thing has been really crazy,’ Jermell told reporters ahead of his fight with Canelo, ‘I try not to touch on that topic too much because at the end of the day I love my brother.
‘At this current moment we don’t see eye-to-eye. It has a lot to do with what he wants in his life and what I want in mine. It’s two completely different things.
‘Growing up and growing apart from each other is just a part of the nature. I tend to accept things just like I accept certain people and I accept the good that comes with the bad.
‘So one day hopefully we speak again, but right now I’m just not in a moment or a mood to wanna deal with that havoc that he brings and all of that kind of stuff.
‘But I’m an animal for my brother too, I rock with him. If he’s not here for my fight night [against Canelo], it’s okay. He can’t fight for me anyway so it don’t hurt my feelings.
‘Whatever it is, it is.’
However, the pair seemed to reconcile on fight night. Jermell and Jermall were seen hugging in the younger Charlo brother’s changing room ahead of the fight in Las Vegas.
